Chin Yen Lee

Born in Malaysia and raised in Singapore, Chin Yen is a lawyer who is passionate about music. She studied piano with the internationally renown Mr. Lee Kum Sing, and viola with Mr. Goh Soon Tioe in Singapore. She has an L.R.S.M. (performance) from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and has performed in Singapore, on both the piano and viola, with various orchestras and chamber music groups, and as a soloist on radio and T.V. More recently, she has been performing on the piano with the Vancouver Piano Ensemble in Canada, Germany, Austria, China, Italy and Slovakia.

Chin Yen comes from a very musical family. She and her three siblings perform chamber music from time to time. Chin Yen was winner of many prizes and awards in music competitions in Singapore and was also the winner in 1967, for all categories of instruments, of a four-year scholarship awarded by the Royal Schools of Music to study music in the United Kingdom. More recently, she has been touring and performing music for two or more pianists with the Vancouver Piano Ensemble, and , with the group, has been heard on Canadian CBC radio shows such as Weekender, Music and Company and Disc Drive, and filmed on Italian, Slovakian and German T.V.

Besides music, Chin Yen is also interested in art, travel, food, photography and animals. She has a Ph.D. in law from the University of London, and has both taught (at Monash University in Melbourne) and practised law (principally in Melbourne and Sydney), in Australia. She is the author of numerous legal publications and several books.

Currently, she lives in Vancouver with her inquisitive dog, two beautiful pianos and a houseful of gadgets. She works in a law office by day and tunes out with music at night.
