Amanda Chan

Ms. Chan has achieved recognition in her career as concert pianist, teacher, lecturer, adjudicator and examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She has given concerts in Canada and abroad as a soloist and chamber player with highlights including USA, China, Austria, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Slovakia.

Her particular passion for the collaborative arts and the Vancouver Piano Ensemble has led to annual concert tours in Europe and Asia, as well as giving masterclasses in China. In September 2004, her concert with the VPE was broadcast live on the Italian television station, "La Teleliberta". Locally, she also collaborates with the Helikon Ensemble, the Opera Breve company and other various chamber groups.

Born and raised in Vancouver, she started her studies with Edward Parker and was highly successful in her competitive career including winning First Place, CIBC National Music Festival, 1991; First Place, Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association National Bach Competition, 1993; "Best Interpretation of a Canadian Premiere Work", CBC National Young Performers Competition, 1995 and Top Prize, Concours Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, 1998. After completing the ARCT diploma and receiving the Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark in Canada in 1987, Ms. Chan was awarded Canada Council Arts grants and numerous top awards as well as receiving full scholarships from Universities to attend Bachelor and Graduate degrees. Ms. Chan completed her Bachelor of Music degree at UBC under Kum-Sing Lee and her Master degree in Piano Performance at the University of Southern California under John Perry. She was awarded the prestigious "Top Graduate" awards at both institutions for finishing head of her graduating class. She continued on with doctoral and post-graduate studies at USC and the Glenn Gould School of Music in Toronto, Canada respectively. In the course of her studies, she was also under the tutelage of Marc Durand, Andre Laplante, Leon Fleisher, Jon Kimura Parker, Robin Wood and Karl-Heinz Kammerling.

Locally, she runs a private teaching studio, is featured on CBC-Radio, and has been on faculty for the Mount Royal College Summer Sessions in Calgary. Since 2002, she has been a Lecturer at the University of British Columbia on the piano faculty.
